Poor Janet Jackson, 49! The iconic pop star announced on Dec. 24 that she needed to postpone her tour for surgery, and on Jan. 5 reports came out saying that doctors may have actually found a potentially cancerous growth on her vocal chords! Our prayers are with her at this time, here’s what we know.

We were sad when Janet announced on Dec. 24 that she would have to postpone her tour for vocal chord surgery, but we weren’t worried. Singers often need to fix the old pipes.Sam Smith and Adele both had to, and now they’re back to being beautiful songbirds. However, when a source told Radar Online on Jan. 5 that docs found a potentially cancerous growth on her chords? That’s when we started freaking out

“Doctors found a growth on Janet’s vocal cords that could be serious,” a source close to the queen of pop told Radar. “It’s a medical condition that has to be taken care of immediately.” Oh no! Poor Janet. If this is true, Dr. Stuart Fischer told Radar it could mean the end of Janet’s illustrious career. “God forbid that this should be cancer of the larynx. That would abruptly end her ability to ever perform again.” He explained that the surgery itself would be rough, as well as the further treatment. “Surgery would be very complex, and followed by months of radiation treatment,” he said.

Janet took to her website on Dec. 24 to share the heartbreaking news that she would have to push back her tour. “I need you to know, I learned today, from my doctors that I must have surgery soon. It breaks my heart to tell you that I am forced to postpone the Unbreakable Tour until the spring.” The singer continued with a call for well-wishes to help her through the rough patch. “Please pray for me, my family and our entire company during this difficult time. There will be no further comment. I love you all so much and am ever grateful for your understanding and your love. Gon’ b alright.”
