One of Jamaica’s most controversial artistes, Vybz Kartel celebrates his 39th birthday today.

Here are ten facts you probably didn’t know about the currently incarcerated deejay.

1. Vybz Kartel’s real name is Adidja Azim Palmer.

2. Vybz Kartel, who is one of six children, was born at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.

3. Though Vybz Kartel reps hard for Portmore, he is originally from Waterhouse.

4. He once went by the name, Addi Banton .

5. Kartel’s first recording was “Love fat woman”.

6. Vybz Kartel came to fame as a member of the ‘Alliance’. In 2005, he fell out with Alliance leader Bounty Killer after collaborating on D’angel’s, “Yuh Know Yuh Baby Father”.

7. Though Vybz Kartel indicated in a song that cake soap can lighten one’s skin, the Blue Power group, a cake soap company, publicly refuted that claim, stating that its product has no skin lightening properties .

8. In 2006, after falling out with the Greensleeves music label, he  changed his name to Addi Di Teacha .

9. Vybz Kartel was once married to a New York bank supervisor, Stacy Elliott. After the dissolution of the marriage, Kartel claimed that Elliot had been unfaithful, citing that she had given birth to a child who was fathered by another man.

10. Kartel’s first marriage may not have worked out,  but his common-law-wife Tanesha ‘Shorty’ Johnson says she plans to remain faithful to Palmer until his release from prison – that could be a long wait since ‘Addi’ wont’ be eligible for parole anytime soon.
