Angry Dave Chappelle fans are demanding their money back after the comedian delivered a half-assed show at the Fillmore in Detroit Thursday night. The first show seems to have gone well—the Detroit News described him as “cool and calm” for his hourlong set where “he came off as thoughtful, studied and howlingly funny, frequently buckling over in laughter at his own jokes” and seemed “self-aware.”
The second show, that night, reportedly didn’t go as well. Chappelle went on an hour late, though TMZ reports that was partly because staff was still seating the guests. Once they did, though, Chappelle “told very few jokes. Instead, he sat quietly smoking, rambling, and slurring his speech.”
After a audience member asked for some jokes, Chappelle apparently replied, “Well sir, it’s a little late for that. Right now I’ve gotta get off the stage because it’s 2:00 in the morning,” although it was only 1 a.m. The Fillmore put out a statement saying it’s not responsible for the content of the acts. Chappelle’s rep also had something to say:
“Out of the 50 shows on the tour, Thursday was definitely not his best set. On the flip side, the incident inspired some additional sharp-witted material and [Friday] he came back with a vengeance.”
Chappelle is schedule to play two more shows at the Fillmore tonight.
