After weeks of auditions in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, Season 8 of Magnum Kings and Queens is ready to air this Saturday, January 17, 2015 with the first of the two audition shows on television stations TVJ and TV6 in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.
Shows air on TVJ at 9:30pm in Jamaica, and TV6 at 10:30pm (ECT) in Trinidad and Tobago.
For the first time in the show’s history, auditions travelled to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, bringing the total to more than 2,000 King and Queen hopefuls turning out across the region.
The judges, Miss Kitty, Professor Nutz and Skatta Burrell all had a difficult time selecting the final 28 for the competition. However, after much deliberation the decision was made and their choices will be revealed on the last audition show on Saturday January 24.
“It was a great run for us doing the auditions throughout the last few months of 2014. We got such a great response from Jamaicans all over and then when we held auditions in Port-of-Spain the Trinibagonians were not only very welcoming, but also very talented. Season 8 of Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall will definitely be one to watch,” said Sophia Bernard-Fairman, Group Brand Manager, Fortified Wines and Liqueurs at J. Wray and Nephew Ltd.
Once the live shows begin on Saturday January 31, the competition will take the usual format. The 28 contestants, 14 princes (male) and 14 princesses (female), will be divided into one of two teams: Castle Red or Castle Blue; with both Castles starting the season with 7 princes and 7 princesses. Week by week, the princes and princesses battle it out lyrically to see who is left standing. The Castles merge into the Magnum Mansion when the final 14 contestants (7 princes + 7 princesses) intensify their lyrical campaign to see which prince and princess will reign supreme at the end of the season to be crowned the Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall for 2015.
The competition is completely powered by public votes as viewers in both Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica decide which of their favourite prince or princess advances throughout the competition as they vote using their mobile phones.
Executive Producer for the show, Mark Kenny says, “I’m really looking forward to Magnum Kings and Queens Season 8 especially since we have the addition of Trinidad and Tobago, both from a contestant point of view and because we’re also broadcasting there, so it’s going to be really interesting to see how people react. We know we have some really good talent so we’re expecting it to be a really good season.”
In addition to hot lyrics and wicked performances, viewers can also look out for the best of dancehall fashions as the princes and princesses try to outdo each other in that arena as well. Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall Season 8 starts this Saturday, January 17, 2015 on TVJ in Jamaica at 9:30PM and TV6 in Trinidad and Tobago at 10:30PM (ECT) with the first of the two audition shows. Live shows begin on January 31.
