A baby girl has been found dumped in bushes with her umbilical chord still attached and covered in bugs an hour after she was born.

The newborn was discovered in the bushes outside Cypress Creek apartment complex in Houston, Texas, on Thursday morning by a resident who heard it crying as they walked by.

When police arrived, they followed a trail of blood in to one of the apartments in the building and found the girl’s 21-year-old mother inside.

She is in the custody of sheriffs. The local district attorney is currently considering charges.

At 5am, another resident was walking out of the complex when he heard the baby crying.

He found her lying in the soil of a flower bed, covered in ants and other debris. Her umbilical chord was still attached.
