A two-week old baby girl was abandoned by her parents because of an extremely rare skin condition in Maharashtra, western India.
The girl who was rejected by her own parents is now being looked after by a 50-year-old grandfather, Dilpe Dode. The tiny baby, born in the seventh month of pregnancy, is beleived to suffer from Intra-Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) along with chromosome abnormalities. Medics are still waiting for laboratory results to make an accurate diagnosis.
Speaking about his granddaughter’s condition Mr Dode said: “I am thankful to the hospital for giving free medical treatment to my granddaughter. It is really disheartening that even her parents have rejected her but I will go to any extent to save her. When the baby was given to us, we were left shocked.
From our relatives to villagers, everyone gathered at our home to have a look at the baby. And when they got to see her they ran away in fear. None held the baby in hands as they thought they will catch the disease. Even my son and daughter-in-law refused to accept her as they were embarrassed to have given birth to her.
Neither the girl’s mother Mamata Dode, 25, nor her father Ajay Dode, 25, have visited her in hospital but her grandfather still hopes they will eventually accept her. Wadia hospital authoriries have agreed to pay N1,580,000 bill for the girl’s treatment and even have arranged accommodation for her grandfather.
