Tension is high in Papine, St. Andrew this afternoon, following killing last night of a pastor by gunmen as he preached in church in the community. Dead is 39-year-old, Delroy Roper of Land Lease in Papine.

Shortly before 10-last night, Pastor Roper was preaching the word of the Lord to his congregation at a church in Highlight View, also called Mud Town. A gunman walked in to the Church and shot him dead. The pastor was shot nine times.

Acting Commander of the St. Andrew Central Police, Superintendent Lynford Rhooms says the Police have yet to find any lead in their investigation. Superintendent Rhooms has confirmed what sources in the underworld have told us that Pastor Roper is a brother of the incarcerated former leader of the notorious Gideon Warriors gang, Joel Andem.

Andem is imprisoned on a double murder conviction. Superintendent Rhooms says the Police have been forced to increase their presence in Papine and its environs, as Pastor Roper was killed in an area where Joel Andem once reigned supreme.

We asked the Superintendent whether the Pastor was suspected of being involved in so called ‘badness’ or gangsterism. The Superintendent is appealing for persons to tell what they know regarding the murder of the Pastor.

Meanwhile the MP for Eastern St. Andrew, the PNP’s Andre Hylton, says Papine is in shock. He says Pastor Roper’s wife has been forced to flee her home. President of the Highlight View Citizens Association, Delgado Williamson, says he knew Pastor Roper and noted how he’d worked to turn his life around.

The religious leader who was last night shot dead by gunmen has been identified by police as the brother of former community don and gang leader, Joel Andem.
