The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is advising its customers that it will begin applying the tax on electricity this month.

The JPS says a General Consumption Tax of 16.5 per cent will be charged to residential customers who use more than 350 kilowatt-hours of energy.

The reintroduction of GCT on electricity was announced by Finance Minister, Dr Peter Phillips, as part of revenue measures when he tabled the 2015/16 budget in March.

At the time, Phillips said the GCT is expected to yield $807 million.
