As of 8 a.m., Hurricane Matthew is making its move north as a strong Category 4 storm. The National Hurricane Center said Matthew is moving toward the northwest at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds at 150 mph.
Matthew is expected to continue its northwest movement Saturday, followed by a turn toward the north in the evening. On the forecast track, the center of Matthew will approach southwestern Haiti and Jamaica on Monday.
The combination of a dangerous storm surge and large and destructive waves could raise water levels.
The NHC says some fluctuations in intensity are possible this weekend, but Matthew is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through Monday. It’s the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic since Felix in 2007.
